Last night saw the awards evening for the Northern Futures Awards, at The Civic in Barnsley.  It’s a new, annual art and design award which recognises and rewards the best emerging creative talent in the north of England.  The four categories were Fine Art, 3D Design, Film and Fashion. And the judging panel was made from some of the industry’s leading champions such as Caroline Cooper-Charles from Warp Films, Katie Bain from the British Fashion Council, and Tim Abrahams from Blueprint Magazine.

Last night was host to several cool events launching in Sheffield city centre, the first being Club Pony’s ‘Too Many Parties’ exhibition of their posters over the past four years at Archipelago.  The second was at the Site Gallery, which was Cypriot born artist Haris Epaminonda’s first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery with newly commissioned video work.  And finally, last but by no mean least, it was the much anticipated launch of The obLONG Club at the Washington pubJody Wildgoose played the opening set, while obLONG after, leaving the headliners The Violet May to rock the place down…

A new solo exhibition by graffiti artist, graphic designer and illustrator Faunagraphic launched at The Old Sweet Shop over the weekend.  Entitled ‘Res Nullius’, the exhibition is heavily influenced by nature and wildlife.
The exhibition will be available to view at The Old Sweet Shop in Nether Edge until 30th June 2010.

Art Sheffield 2010 – Life: A User’s Manual is a citywide contemporary art event showcasing artwork by locally, nationally and internationally based artists. 

This is their fifth event, organised by Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum, to take place since 2001 and takes the form of a single exhibition, spread across the city’s gallery spaces: Bloc, Millennium Gallery, S1 Artspace, Site Gallery, Yorkshire Artspace, Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, and the public realm. 

The exhibitions will run from 6th March to 1st May 2010.

As part of First Thursday, Unusual View, a new arts community group, launched its oddities with a special exhibition at the OH Gallery, Oxford House, Bethnal Green, London.  Set up by former artist and fashion photographer, Amanda McDonald, the group forges links between artists with employers in the arts through the provision of diverse exhibition platforms.

The group exhibition brings together a range of up-and-coming artists within the Unusual View umbrella, showing a diverse range of mediums including sculptors, mask makers, painters and photographers.
