Last night saw the awards evening for the Northern Futures Awards, at The Civic in Barnsley.  It’s a new, annual art and design award which recognises and rewards the best emerging creative talent in the north of England.  The four categories were Fine Art, 3D Design, Film and Fashion. And the judging panel was made from some of the industry’s leading champions such as Caroline Cooper-Charles from Warp Films, Katie Bain from the British Fashion Council, and Tim Abrahams from Blueprint Magazine.

Pecha Kucha Sheffield #02 followed from where we left off with #01 in April, by hosting it in another intimate and cool venue.  This time it was The Wig and Pen in characteristic Cathedral Quarter.

The theme was ‘Enthusiasm’ which comes from the ancient Greek meaning ‘Enthusios’ or the ‘God Within’.   As usual, there was an eclectic mix of speakers; Greg Povey (he knows all the word to ‘Trouble’ by Shampoo),  Deborah Egan (she once had a punch up with Phil Jupitus), YearFourCreative (they’re bike geeks), Chris Dowson (graphic designer with a quiff), and Tim Rumboll (he makes sounds).  And a last minute request from Ian Anderson.

It was another amazing night full of thought-provoking presentations and banter, as well as interesting looking cushions.

We’re starting to plan Pecha Kucha Sheffield #03, so watch this space (follow us on Twitter: PKNSheff).

Made By Jonty is Sheffield’s newest ‘gastro-cafe’.  They approached us to help them with their launch PR, of course we were more than honoured to take on that challenge.

As well as doing a brand audit, we wrote and sent out a press release, and organised the official launch event.  The evening was a great success, and saw a nice mix of guests enjoying Made By Jonty’s salad bar and the Pimm’s went down very well indeed…

Last night was host to several cool events launching in Sheffield city centre, the first being Club Pony’s ‘Too Many Parties’ exhibition of their posters over the past four years at Archipelago.  The second was at the Site Gallery, which was Cypriot born artist Haris Epaminonda’s first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery with newly commissioned video work.  And finally, last but by no mean least, it was the much anticipated launch of The obLONG Club at the Washington pubJody Wildgoose played the opening set, while obLONG after, leaving the headliners The Violet May to rock the place down…

Last night saw the launch of the first ever Pecha Kucha night in Sheffield – the 300th city to host these special events.  Together with Clare MacKenzie and Jonny Douglas, we managed to get the rights to the Pecha Kucha brand, and will be hosting a total of 4 events in the coming year.

For Pecha Kucha Sheffield 01, we decided on using The Chimney House, a unique building in Kelham Island - this meant the event having a very boutique and intimate feel.  As for speakers, they were Alasdair from Article magazine, Andy from YooMee, artist Wildago, and Ian Anderson from Designers Republic.

We are already planning Pecha Kucha Sheffield 02 for the summer, watch this space…
